We propose an algorithm for ontent-based image retrieval of grays ale images of obje ts against a ba kground of texture. It employs feature ve tors based on moment invariants of detail oeÆ ients produ ed by the lifting s heme. The predi tion lters in this s heme are hosen adaptively: low order (small stenils) near edges and high order elsewhere. The aim is an algorithm that retrieves similar images of an obje t irrespe tive of translation, rotation, re e tion or re-sizing of the obje t, lighting onditions and the ba kground texture. We dis uss and propose both linear and nonlinear transforms of the feature ve tors in order to develop a suitable metri for measuring the distan e between them.
